Screenshots are very useful to share ideas quickly or just to save data for later but after some time your desktop can become cluttered with image files really fast and even though since Mojave’s you can put files in collections it is better to have a dedicated folder for it.

In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to change screenshots default save location folder in macOS Mojave/Catalina and previous versions.

macOS 10.14 Mojave and later

In macOS Mojave Apple made the experience of taking screenshot even better, One of the new features is that you have a user interface and now you can change the default save location folder within that interface instead of typing commands on the console like in previous versions of macOS which we also are going to cover here later.

Step 1

Press cmd + shift + 5 to open the Screenshots tool, you can also open it by going to the Finder and then Applications/Utilities/Screenshots

Step 2

Select Options and then Other Location to navigate to the desire folder, when you are done hit scape and after that all your screenshots will be saved there.

And that’s it, changing the Screenshots folder is that easy with macOS Mojave and now that your desktop is clean there’s and awesome way to improve your productivity by having all your Screenshots at hand skip to the to the end to find out how.

macOS 10.13 High Sierra and older

Step 1

Open Terminal application located in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.

Step 2

In Terminal type the following:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location

Step 3

Now drag and drop your Screenshots folder on top of the Terminal window and it will automatically fill in the directory path and press Enter

Step 4

For the changes to be applied type the following:

killall SystemUIServer

To access all your Screenshots you need to navigate to the folder each time you need them and if you are like me and have hundreds of screenshots finding the one you need can be more difficult than it should.

Holdr is a multi-tool software made for the Mac and with the Screenshots feature you can preview all your screenshots in a beautiful and easy to use interface with the speed of a shortcut.

All you screenshots will be displayed and sorted chronollogically so you can share them easily.

Just drag and drop one or multiple screenshots to any app and that’s it.
