The oldest Sanchi Stupa

After enjoying a trip with Bhopal’s lake, mosque and adventurous van vihar now let’s move to the nearest place of the city. When turning to some historical and fascinating destinations, one of which is Sanchi Stupa.

The “Great Sanchi Stupawas originally commissioned by the emperor “Ashoka The Great” in the 3rd century BCE. The construction work of this stupa was overseen by his wife “Devi”. She was a daughter of Vidisha and the place Sanchi is the witnessed of her birth and Ashoka and her marriage.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi is the oldest stone structure. Its core was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. Later, some modifications are made during the Maurya period and Shunga period. Really Ashoka has made the one of the best monuments of India. The four gateways, constructed in 35 BCE, are considered as the best Buddhist expression in the world. The four gateways are covered with wonderful architectural carvings and depict the stories related to the Buddha’s life. The Ashoka pillar, which contains four lions like that of Sarnath, is found in Sanchi as well. An excellent example of the Greco-Buddhist style, the pillar is also known for its exquisite construction and perfect structural balance. The archaeological survey of India, supervises the Sanchi Museum, houses the Ashoka pillar along with other items which was used by the monks of Sanchi.

After Sanchi, now start a journey to “Bhimbetka rock shelters” which is located in the Risen District of Madhya Pradesh near Abdullahganj and 45 km south of Bhopal at the southern edge of Vindhya hills. South of these rock shelters is successive ranges of the Satpura hills. It is an archaeological site of Palaeolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age. The paintings in it describe the pre- historic age and development of human with time.

The name Bhimbetka means “sitting place of Bhima” Bhima is the epic hero of “Mahabharata”. It has numerous paintings of animals and flowers. It is inside the Ratapani wildlife sanctuary so it has vegetation and around the hills. It has 600 caves, but only 12 are open for the visitors. It is recognized as UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003.

There are also still some surprising places to visit such as Chaman Mahal, Shaukat Mahal, Rani Mahal, Manua Bhan ki Tekri, Gauhar Mahal, Kerwa Dam, Halali Dam to enjoy boating, Moti Masjid, you can also enjoy the ride on ropeway and shopping.
