When holidaying in Paphos, take a day off from the beach, and go touring around the island’s wine routes. It is a memorable experience and you have the opportunity to get to know the remote traditional villages, old monasteries, enchanting vineyards and wine museums of the island and sip on local wines. Great way to spend a day, don’t you think? The Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) has published a guide, ‘Cyprus Wine Route Guide,’ which is available to the public. The guide informs visitors on the six enchanting routes to embark on in Limassol and Paphos. On these routes you will encounter stunning scenery, wineries and charming villages. Take your pick!

Laona — Akamas

One of the most popular routes is the Laona Route. Discover the charming and entrancing region by driving along coastlines, serene country landscape, traditional villages and blooming vines. The locals you will meet at the picturesque villages are amazingly welcoming. You will visit Ineia, Pano Arodes and Kathikas, which all lie on the western area of the island. ‘Xynisteri’ is a renowned grape variety that blossom in the Cypriote climate, producing white wines. The specific variety is considered among the best on the island, with a subtle aroma and taste. ‘Maratheftiko’is one of the most popular red wines you can find on the route, which is made from roses, violets and a variety of red fruit.

Koumandaria wine is an ancient sweet wine produced in Cyprus. There are fourteen ‘Koumandarie’ Villages which produce this renowned wine originating as far back as the 12th century. The knights of St. John used to produce and export the wine which is made from sun dried grapes. It is well-worth visiting the ancient Medieval Castle of Kolossi, where the knights used to live and produce the wine.
Drive along the Vouni Panagias — Ambelitis route on the western part of the island, in the district of Paphos. Enjoy the pictorial mountainous landscape while trying the delicious locally produced wines. At the numerous wineries you will encounter you will taste wines flavoured with peaches, green apples and apricots. The villages that will captivate you by their beauty are Vouni Panagias, Chrisorogiatissa and Agios Fotios which produce wines made from red grapes. Tipsy yet?

Diarizos Valley

Driving along the Diarizos River in Paphos district, you will be enthralled by the untouched nature and serene scenery while visiting the lovely vineyards along the way. Compared to the other vineyards in Cyprus, Diarizos Valley is less well known as it is not in the mountains.
