Build it yourself. At least try.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

— Steve Jobs

A few months ago, I mentioned that I broke up with my job, and said that I was figuring out what was next which has been my excuse every time I’ve left a job; some variation of “finding myself”. It’s a lame excuse if I’m being honest. I know exactly where myself is and what myself wants. I just wanted other people to give me the opportunity to do what I want. But, that’s like expecting other people to do exactly what you want them to do when you want them to do it. Life doesn’t work like that.

Overall, my career has existed wholly around helping people do something. Whether that was running their lives so that they could get home for bath time; saying ‘no’ for them so they wouldn’t over commit themselves on a business trip; or helping build whatever they were trying to accomplish. I’ve always been in the business of helping others make their dreams or unrealistic ideals come to life. And I like it. There’s something about seeing other people succeed that makes the little spot in my gut spark. It’s odd to say that. That you’re in the business of propelling others to a new level. Most would say that’s what they want for themselves, but, when I sit and talk with my friends and we dive into the 2 bottles of wine induced deep conversations about what our purpose is (don’t lie, you know you do the same), I always have one answer: helping others make their dreams a reality whatever that dream is.

When I die (as morbid as that sounds), I want people to remember me for being there for them, helping them, and pushing them to succeed. It’s the best part of my day to day relationships so why not make it my career?

My resume lists the positions that I’ve taken on an imaginary ideal — an ideal that they’d turn into what I wanted, eventually. That, ideally, whatever I was told in my interview with said companies would just magically happen. They were all positions I created in my head, and while I regret nothing and take every experience as being vital to my life plan, they were never going to be exactly what I wanted. Because what I wanted to be doing wasn’t at all what any of these jobs could offer me — at least not in the way that I needed. So, after a while, I’d leave for another job that seems ‘just perfect’. And the cycle would repeat.

In my recent soul searching part 3 quarter life crisis, I found that the job I want probably doesn’t exist; it may not be real, at least in the capacity that I want. And expecting someone else to make said job for me seems like a lot of pressure to put on someone else. And I realized this right as I was on the cusp as accepting another job for another agency promising me an unrealistic job description that I knew I’d be unhappy with 6 months from now. So I declined it, and decided, logically, the simple solution would be to make it myself and to do things that I’m excited to wake up and do everyday. I mean, why not? As cliche as the phrase “YOLO” is, we do only have the ability to live in the present, so why not make it the best it can be?

So, that’s what I’m doing. I’ve packed up, moved to LA, working full time at SoulCycle (read more about why here), and embarking on doing what I truly have always wanted to do at the same time. After all, I don’t want to look back in my life and say coulda shoulda woulda. What do I have to lose with trying?

Holistic Media was created with one simple vision: to help people reach their ultimate purpose.

Whether it means helping someone build a company they’ve always wanted, or helping them accomplish their dream with a talent (music, art, dance, etc.), HM was created to do just that. We want to build people and businesses with a 360 approach; it’s more than just what your financial book says — it’s also about the people you chose to build that business and brand with and the people you touch as a result— HM takes all parts of your business and brand into account when strategizing what comes next and how we can make your dreams your reality. Whether you’re one person who is trying to define and grow your brand, or a team of 25 who need to establish what growth means and need someone to guid them through business management decisions— HM is in the business of making your dreams a reality.

It sounds crazy, and maybe it is, but if I can help an unknown talent reach their goals, a crazy new startup idea come to fruition, or help a business manage themselves better, then I’m doing exactly what I want to do. And to me, that’s exactly what I’ve been searching for. They say that when your work becomes more than just work, you’ve found what you’re meant to be doing, and since moving to LA, I feel like I’m heading in the right direction.

Stay tuned for some news on our first clients.
