You have most probably heard about the various health benefits of including a green juice or green smoothie into your morning routine. One of the questions patients ask me the most is: what is healthier: juicing or blending?

Juicing extracts the liquid from the fruits and vegetables, which means you do not consume the fiber. By removing the fiber, you are able to consume a larger amount of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, because fiber is what makes a smoothie filling. The rule of thumb in juicing is that 70–80% should be vegetables and only a small portion of fruit in order to avoid a rapid spike in our blood sugar, due to the fact that the juice is absorbed so quickly into our body´s blood stream.

  • Makes the nutrients more readily available to the body in much larger quantities than if you were to eat the fruits and vegetables whole
  • By removing the fiber from vegetables and fruit it gives your digestive system a rest, great for cleansing and detox programs
  • Juicing is what I recommend for clients who have digestive issues that make them sensitive to fiber or for patients who are ill and have lost their appetite, because it allows them to ingest large amounts of green goodness without making their digestive tract work.
  • Juicing is a great option for people concentrated on healing, for example there is an excellent juice for gastritis that even heals ulcers, Check out my Holistic Juice Challenge for more information

Smoothies unlike juices consist of the ENTIRE fruit or vegetable, and contain gut-friendly fiber. The blending process breaks the fiber apart, which allows for an easier digestion then if you were for example to eat a whole apple.

  • Smoothies contain fiber making them more filling and a great option in the morning, to use as a snack or as an after the gym meal. If your interested in receiving 7 holistic smoothie recipes for FREE, including my “Post-Exercise Protein Packed Smoothie” be sure to sign up for my Holistic Juice Challenge.
  • Smoothies contain gut-friendly Prebiotics which comes from the fiber in fruits and vegetables
  • Smoothies ensure a slow and even release of nutrients which avoids blood sugar spikes.
  • Smoothies allow you to add amazing super -foods that you cant in a juicer such as: sprouts nut butters, protein powders etc.
Juicing and Blending

I recommend INVESTING in a high quality juicer because cheaper, centrifugal juicers introduce heat and oxygen and destroy the enzymes and nutrients in your fruits and vegetables. A premium cold-press juicer will produce a superior-quality juice and allow you to extract more from your fruit and vegetables, saving expense in the long-term. For blending I recommend investing in a Vitamix or a nutribullet.
