Looking for an internship in ConTech? 3 Things that I have learned at my first Product Management Internship at HoloBuilder — Reflections by a Civil Engineering Student
My name is Sahil Tadwalkar and I am a civil engineering student. During my studies, I spend most of my days in class learning about the details of construction and structural design. I’ve had internships in the past where I’ve put what I learned into practice, but I was missing another side of the industry. I started to look into lean tools to improve productivity and found HoloBuilder. When I saw how I could have been using the product onsite all along, I knew I had to work here!
At HoloBuilder, I was able to see construction through the lens of a technology startup and still contribute in a meaningful way. I was also seeking this new role to broaden my horizons. While it’s quite different from traditional engineering, consulting and construction, there are still many similarities. Product management is all about focusing on your client and executing decisions to make them happy. Internal processes need to be managed and at the end of the day, a high-quality product needs to be delivered. This is true in almost every business and the skills I’ve learned at HoloBuilder can be transferred into other industries.
Here are some important things to keep in mind when making the transition into a new role:
It’s important to ask questions, especially in an early stage startup environment. This is when the company will be experimenting with different products, pricing, and markets. It can also create a platform to discuss other questions and educate more people at the company. It is often said that asking 5 whys can bring you to the root cause of a problem. Knowing the root problem is the first and most important step to creating a successful business and fostering a positive learning environment. This can only be achieved by asking questions!
The best way to make an impact is to take initiative. There are always limited resources and seemingly infinite things to do. Team members appreciate when you find things that need to be done, and do them. A lot of times supervisors or peers don’t have time to assign specific tasks. That’s not to say there is no mentorship, but showing initiative goes a long way. Doing something is better than nothing.
During my time at HoloBuilder, I noticed a lack of educational content for one of our flagship features, 360 SiteStream. I decided that the best way to help customers and add to our content pool was via webinar, so I proceeded to create slides, set up the product and launch the webinar.
Learn As Much As You Can
This is an internship for you, so get what you want out of it. Doing work for another department or tasks outside your job description will give you greater exposure to the firm. This can help you make decisions about your future career. I have been doing a lot of marketing work as well as the product and I like it a lot! Startups can be very rewarding, with ample opportunity to make connections and talk to professionals in the industry. In San Francisco alone I have been to more construction networking events than ever before.
Through meeting new people and exploring different career paths, I was able to get a better sense of what I want to do post-graduation. This would not have happened if I chose not to learn more about the industry and the different roles people have.
Overall I had an amazing time during my internship. I encourage anyone who has an interest in a fast-paced work environment to seek startups in their industry as a potential workplace. HoloBuilder has been perfect for me and has allowed me to get the most out of my internship and experience the construction industry in a new way.
We encourage any student pursuing an undergraduate or masters degree to apply for a position in their field of expertise. For more information or to apply, write us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What can we expect from you?
Being a startup we are growing quickly and constantly. As more people join, the structure and hierarchy of the company will change. If you’re someone who enjoys a dynamically changing, fast-paced work environment then HoloBuilder might be for you. Even better if you have experience working at startups or in the construction industry, although this is not necessary.
“We see an internship as a long interview process and we often offer interns a full-time position at the end of the summer. Having run the internship program for two years now, we hired at least one intern at the end of each internship period. Either way, for all interns it is a great learning experience to learn what it takes to be successful in a startup. Our interns get a lot of autonomy and have to take initiative by themselves to make awesome things happen.” — Christian Claus
What can we do for you?
We can provide hands-on experience and mentorship in various aspects of the business. We have positions in product management, marketing, design, and computer science! Once you gain the trust of your peers, you will be given more responsibility and autonomy. It’s possible to make the biggest impact on the company as an intern, and we’re always encouraging our students to branch out and try new things. Expect to see various projects throughout your internship depending on the needs of the company and your own interests. There are also opportunities to join us full time depending on how the internship goes.
What do other interns say?
“Coming from a humanities background HoloBuilder introduced me to two entirely separate fields: that of a bi-national software startup and the construction industry as their clients. Going into the internship I was looking forward to learning how collaboration works when two offices are separated by multiple time zones and I was not disappointed. Apart from gaining a lot of hands-on software experience, the insights into how to collaborate in a fast-paced international team are invaluable.” — Tim Fuchs
“After doing my internship at HoloBuilder it was clear I have found my dream job, not only I got to work on creating solutions for the construction industry but also I got to be part of a team that shares the same passion and engagement for creating disruptive solutions.” — Mayra Soto
HoloBuilder is a startup in the construction technology space, that provides a photo documentation solution specializing in 360-degree reality capture. We have top general contractors in the country as clients and are growing each and every day.
