“What are your hopes for the future of parenting?” Laura Fox asked. My hopes are cultural and systemic. I hope that the world catches up to my intense, strong-willed kid.

My hope is that intimidation and achievement-focused parenting styles give way, so that tomorrow’s parents raise a generation that is self-realized, empowered and kind.

I have a non-parent friend who regularly asks me, “What’s wrong with kids today? We didn’t have a choice, we did as we were told.” Have you heard this before? Usually, I feel like it is too hard to explain. So my answer is, “It’s complicated.”

There is a trend towards respecting children, and teaching them to think for themselves. It is harder, but I’m all for it, especially since it is the only parenting ‘style’ that has helped my family find harmony.

How do we want to treat each other as a society in the future? My hope is that intimidation and achievement-focused parenting styles give way, so that tomorrow’s parents…
