Where to Begin Organizing Your Home

Four Reliable Methods to Get Your Home Organized

If the thought of organizing an entire home seems daunting at best and insurmountable at worst, you are not alone. Daily life often gets in the way of maintaining organization. It starts with a few dishes in the kitchen sink. Then, you are too tired to bring your rubbish outside. You might forget to go through the mail for a few consecutive days. Little by little, things do not get put away, clean and dirty intermingle and somehow the remote control has gone missing. Your entire home has revolted and you have lost more control than just the remote.

It is time to take back that control. The hardest part of organizing your home will be taking the first steps. So, here are a few tips! Start by choosing one of the following organization methods:

Divide and conquer. Each member of the household focuses on a specific task or room. For example, everyone spends the day sorting through his or her dresser to donate clothes. To make the task more exciting for children, make it a competition. The winner will receive a new toy, treat, or other small reward.

Start with the most disorganized space. This allows you to accomplish the most tedious work at the beginning. Other rooms will be much more manageable. Plus, you will literally be able to see the difference which will boost your confidence and propel you to continue.

Start with the most organized space. If you keep an orderly home office, file miscellaneous papers, pay outstanding bills and delete old emails. You will finish this space quickly and build momentum to tackle more difficult rooms.

Pick and choose. If you prefer to dabble in several rooms at once, focus on a specific task. For example, closets: most homes contain at least a bedroom (or bedroom space) and hall, or catch-all, closet. Organize those before moving onto other similar spaces (entertainment centers, desks, etc.) By sticking to categories, you will develop a pattern and work more efficiently with each successful venture.

Now that you have the building blocks for organizing every room, roll up sleeves and get your home neat and tidy!
