With the start of this account, we now have the chance to reach out directly to you — homeowners, travel enthusiasts, policy wonks, and curious readers — about the issues affecting the short-term rental (STR) industry. We’re excited to provide insight into the issues landscape, discuss in-depth local regulations, and offer content that opens your eyes to the myriad benefits of STRs.
In the coming months, we’ll be writing and curating content from HomeAway users, small business owners, experts, community leaders, and more on our public policy publication. In our inaugural post, we shared an open letter from former California Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Jr.
The timing of our launch is a product of the national policy landscape surrounding STRs. Some cities and states, such as Nashville and Arizona, have implemented smart forward-thinking legislation in order to address the concerns of communities and protect short-term rental homeowners, managers and travelers. Meanwhile some, have begun to craft burdensome policies that threaten the future of short-term rental innovation. There are many other debates around the country that fall within that spectrum as policymakers continue to deliberate over how to best manage the exciting, burgeoning STR industry. We want to enter that dialogue to make sure people are given an accurate picture of STRs.

We’re excited to use this Medium account to pass along interesting facts about HomeAway and our industry, as well as stories from you — local homeowners, managers, and hosts.
