Yesterday was National Donut Day. Today is Up the Workout Routine Day. For many people, eating donuts leads to increased guilt, which leads to an increased desire to exercise. According to CBS News, one donut has about 200 calories, which takes about 15 minutes of moderate paced running to burn off.

Cops are often teased about loving donuts. I think everyone loves donuts, but the cop — donut association is deeply embedded in our national culture. I can attest to the fact that buying donuts in uniform brings a smile to almost everyone in the store. It also frequently results in inquiries about where to purchase the best donuts in town. I guess when you’re a cop, you’re considered somewhat of a donut connoisseur.

While the teasing and quips like “bad cop, no donut” are all in good fun, our citizens do expect their police officers to be in good enough health to fulfill their primary mission of protecting society. Some people might be curious as to what the physical standards are to be a police officer. Here are the minimum standards peace officers.

· Vertical Jump = 14 inches

· One-Minute Sit-ups = 15 repetitions

· Push-Up = 21 repetitions

· 300 Meter Run = 77 seconds

· 1.5 Mile Run/Walk = 17 minutes and 17 seconds

The standards are the same whether you are female or male, and are not adjusted for age. Remember, these are the minimum fitness standards that must be met in order to be certified in Idaho as a law enforcement officer. Other states have different standards. For example, Montana requires their police candidates to pass a Physical Ability Test that is an obstacle course based on specific job tasks.

How do you think you would do? Give it a try today. It might be a great way to work off a few of those donuts you thoroughly enjoyed yesterday. If you do well on the fitness standards, you might consider a career in law enforcement. Agencies nationwide are searching for qualified candidates who have a desire to serve their communities. And, if you happen to know where the best donuts in town are sold, it’s just an added bonus.
