According to the latest statistics, in 2016 over 1.5 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer and almost 600,000 will die from some form of the disease. The most common cancers include: breast, lung, prostate, colon, bladder, melanoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, thyroid, kidney, leukemia, endometrial, and pancreatic cancers.

These statistics are alarming and scary

The number of men and woman diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetimes is approximately 39.6% based on 2010–2012 data. And in 2010, the United States spent nearly $125 billion for cancer care and this number could reach $156 billion in 2020.

Many of us have family and friends diagnosed that have been diagnosed and subjected to treatments that wreak havoc on the body including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. These therapies are a reaction to detecting the cancer and are most successful when the cancer is found in its earliest stages. For this reason, the American Cancer Society has spent extensive resources to make advances in educating the public of the importance of routine physicals and annual tests.

The number of cancers that we could be diagnosed with is overwhelming.

A major focus regarding CANCER has been on finding a CURE. I believe we would all agree that an easy pill that could make all this scary cancer go away is what we really want. But our bodies are all different and have varied responses to treatments.

Maybe the approach we are taking to CANCER can be improved and could be something to improve the health and welfare of the American Public. In addition to annual screenings and testings, what if we took the approach that it is possible that any one of us can come done with one of the many above listed cancers?

There is a strong movement of people advocating that a certain diet can help in cancer prevention. A website advertises itself as an Initiative that has catalyzed a movement to improve health through cancer-fighting foods. Medical science has shown that there are “practical, healthy, and tasty food choices that can be made by you every day, at every meal, to incorporate cancer-fighting foods into your diet.” As a Nation, do we need more education for the public, helping them understand that a focus on overall, whole body health can be a way to PREVENT the costly treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation?

Eat to Beat Cancer™ Initiative states that their research has shown that certain foods “have properties that can starve the microscopic cancers that develop in our bodies all the time. These properties are based on the breakthrough approach of suppressing blood vessels that feed cancers, a process known as angiogenesis. This initiative is built on our work and research conducted throughout the world and published in peer-reviewed journals from the National Cancer Institute, American Medical Association, American Society for Nutrition, and hundreds of other highly-regarded journals.”

In light of this evidence and movement, let’s start spreading the word and win this FIGHT with cancer.
