As much of the Mid-Atlantic braces for a potentially epic blizzard, we asked our contributors to give us a compilation of their favorite “life hacks” when it comes to winter weather preparedness. Now, we know some of these may be common sense. And of course, when it comes to life threatening situations, always call 911.

Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has some great tips when it comes to preparedness efforts before, during, and after the storm. Take a minute to take a look at these for some helpful guidance on how to prepare you and your family during a severe winter event.

Without further ado, here are the top ten life hacks for winter weather as prepared by the plugged-in team.

Life Hacks for Winter Weather

1. When shoveling snow, spray the blade with a silicone-based lubricant to help prevent snow from sticking.

2. Tired of always having wet socks? Slip a sandwich bag over each sock before putting your shoes on.

3. Run your ceiling fan clockwise and on a low setting to push warm air back to floor level.

4. If your car gets stuck in snow, kitty litter or car mats can help get you out of a slick spot.

5. Make Do-it-Yourself Hand warmers in 5 minutes.

6. Spray of WD-40 can keep a keyhole from getting frozen.

7. Prevent icy windshields by spraying on vinegar and water.

8. Park your car facing east so that the sun will defrost your windshield as it rises.

9. Keep a spare pair of socks in your glove box. They work in a pinch if you need some extra traction over your shoes if you need to push out. They can also serve to keep your windshield wipers dry and ice-free during a storm.

10. Place beer between the inner and outer window (as long as it’s not freezing) to free up some fridge space. If they’re going down fast, just stick them in the snow.
