It Really Irritates Me When People Act Smug About Their Money
If not for the grace of God, there go I
It used to be that people were criticized if they talked about money. They were told not to divulge their salaries, and they were shamed if they flaunted what they had.
These days, it seems to be the other way around. People seem to want to live in a McMansion and post pictures of themselves holding a handful of cash. Fancy cars and designer clothes seem to be the norm.
But we all know that what we see is not always the truth. If you ever read the book, The Millionaire Next Door, you would find out that the humble neighbor who drives a ratty old truck might have millions of dollars in the bank, while some of his more affluent-looking neighbors have immense credit card debt.
You just never know.
My pet peeve is when those people who truly have money want to shame those who don’t. For instance, I mentioned to an old friend that roofers were coming to roof my house soon and that my husband and I had saved for a year and a half to afford it. He raised his eyebrow and asked why we needed to save for so long.
