Part 6 — The Way of the Wolf

The teeth were pale, yellowish and disgusting. The boy’s fear though, stemmed from the sight of the sharp canine, salivating jaw, and menacing eyes.

The boy moved back quickly, silently; finding the tallest tree to climb. From here, he began to control his breathing, and comfort his fear, so that the scent of his presence would not reach the sensitive nostrils of the wolf that was standing on the ground a slight distance away from the boy’s position on the tree.

Thanking god that the wolf had not set its predator instincts upon him, the boy began to search for the animal that the wolf had set its hungry eyes upon. He caught sight of a rabbit near the bushes. It was foraging for food, completely oblivious to the fact that it was soon going to become food.

The more the boy watched the suspense-fueled scene in front of him, the more he began to pity the rabbit. Maybe, he could break a twig or two from the tree and throw it across. The noise would either scare the wolf or the rabbit, or maybe both. He found the strongest twig that he could break, and aimed it somewhere in the vicinity of the rabbit.

And either the wolf or the rabbit will go hungry, or maybe both

The leaves around the boy rustled a bit. He understood that the mountain had begun to whisper to him. “At least, the rabbit will be not get eaten up,” he whispered back.

Let the wolf remain hungry, you say?

The boy shrugged in response.

You know what hunger does to you, child?

The boy thought for a moment. “My mother says I get cranky when I go hungry. When I think of it, yes, I do lose my temper, feel frustrated and…hunger…well… it does drives us a little away from sanity, does it not?”

Imagine a hungry wolf, on the loose…

The boy gulped. His imagination had shown him things he did not wish to see.

Still want to interfere with a natural state of being, because you would feel better for helping the rabbit?

The boy knew that the wolf, after satisfying its hunger, would not turn upon another prey, until it was time for its next meal. While the boy would not be able to save this rabbit, he would, still be saving other animals from begin devoured savagely by a hunger-mad wolf. He would, also be saving the wolf from its own madness. The boy would be saving quite a few animals by not interfering with their natural settings.

Biting his lips, the boy closed his eyes, and ears to shut out the sight and sound of the hunt ahead of him.

Dear Reader,

What is your nature of being? What is your hunger? And how does it drive you into madness?

I know a boy who loves his food. Four-square meals, a day. And when it does not happen on time, he does get cranky. As do I, when I ignore my hunger. My father-in-law has always gone bonkers over dessert. He itches us with his repeated demand for dessert, driving his own insanity into our heads. My husband, who is used to ignoring his hunger, calls us all mad. I tell him that he always goes after what he wants, and then goes mad every time he is denied what he wants. Well, that, is his hunger.

I also know an otherwise calm boy, who hit me, because I teasingly told him that he could not go to play football that day. Football is his food, and when it is denied, he goes mad in hunger.

Humans, weird beings that we are, are hungry for different things, our mind, choosing its own control methods. Or its method to madness.

As long as we are able to satisfy the hunger of the body and the mind, we are able to remain calm. The minute this delicate balance is lost, we too, get lost. Most of us, do not even realize this until the mind is unable to control its madness.

Hunger, is a feeling that is meant to satisfied. It is a natural state of being, as nature wills it to be.

Here’s to the magic of eating the right foods for the stomach, and the soul!
