Before there was Pokémon, there were fish. Before there was Pikachu, there was Yellowtail. And before people were running around Los Angeles looking for colorful virtual animals in alleys and under couches using their iPhones, they were deep sea fishing on the ocean’s peaceful surface in Newport Beach searching for real fish with nothing but a stick and a string. At first glance, Pokémon GO and deep sea fishing are clearly very different activities. However, we’d be amiss to not recognize some of the similarities that exist between the two. Originally a means of hunting and gathering, deep sea fishing has evolved a bit over the years to become both a sport and a leisurely activity. Introduced in 1996, Pokémon was originally a series of video games and trading cards, yet has progressed into a game of chasing virtual characters around our own backyards. Both involve catching creatures. Both require patience and focus. And both are feasible options when making your weekend plans. So how do you decide between the two? We’ve decided to help make this crucial decision a bit easier. Read on for Hommily’s 2016 Semi-Annual Pokémon GO VS Deep Sea Fishing Strategy Guide!

*The information below is based on scientific research and data, and is solely intended to assist you in making Sunday Funday plans.

Pikachu VS Yellowtail

Pikachu- Don’t be fooled by that giant smile and those rosy cheeks: this electric pokémon is fast and has a lightning rod hidden ability.

Yellowtail Tuna- High in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, Yellowtail also contain many other vitamins and are commonly used to prepare sushi.

Winner? Pikachu. We were fooled by that giant smile and the glimmer in those eyes. Plus, we prefer California rolls.

Barracuda VS Squirtle

Barracuda- Snake like in appearance, their fang-like teeth are similar to those of a piranha. They can grow to be quite large and have a furious behavior.

Squirtle- Though on the slower side, this water pokémon sprays foam from his mouth and can protect himself with his shell.

Winner? Barracuda. We don’t want to mess with those teeth. And is it just us, or is he staring directly through your soul as well?

Charizard VS Sculpin

Charizard- This fire and flying pokémon is fast and has a solar-power hidden ability.

Sculpin- Found in numerous habitats, the Sculpin has sharp fins underneath that can help anchor it to rocks in fast moving waters.

Winner? Draw. Sculpin’s teeth outnumber its competitor’s by a few dozen, and we respect the Sculpin’s ability to hang tough when water gets rough. But Charizard’s skin is orange, and orange is the new presidential.

Since there is no clear winner, more research and information may be required. Or you can just turn off your computer and give them each a shot yourself. Pokémon GO is now available for iPhone and Android devices, and Newport Beach offers deep sea fishing in the legendary waters off the coast of Catalina Island.

Whatever it is you’re looking for this weekend- fish, pokémon, or even Dory- we wish you the best of luck. And whatever it is you find, we’ll take full credit.
