We were meant to travel

We were meant to travel.

It courses through our blood,

The need to conquer gravel,

Sand and stone and mud.

You were meant to show me

What flowed inside your veins,

The turning earth below me,

Mountains, seas and plains.

I was meant to follow,

Your fellow till the end.

But I turned weak and hollow,

My cogs you couldn’t mend.

We were meant to travel

Yet you stayed to watch me die.

Now that I’m sand and gravel,

I’ll hold you, low or high.
