Tai Mo Shan is Section 8 of the the Maclehose Trail — a 10 section trail that totals of 100KM in distance — and is well-known to be the highest mountain in Hong Kong with a staggering 957 meters of elevation from sea level.

Once you’ve reached the top, absorb the all-encompassing view of the iconic New Territories and where the skyline meets the mountains.

Where is it?

  • Lead Mine Pass (鉛礦坳) to Route Twisk ( 荃錦公路)

Distance

  • 9.7 Kilometres (6 Miles)

Not the easiest hike for children however go on your own pace, take a few long breaks in between, and you will definitely finish the seemingly-undoable hike.

Elevation

  • 957m

Additionally, Tai Mo Shan is the second highest coastal peak among the whole of China, trailing behind Mount Lao that’s 1,113 metres above sea level.

🔄 Directions

1. Getting there

  • Go to Tai Po MTR Station
  • Go to Exit A3
  • Ride minibus number 23K
  • Get off at San Uk Ka, Wun Yiu Rd
  • Walk around 1.5km to Lead Mine Pass

2. Getting back

  • Ride Bus number 51
  • Get off at ‘Nina Tower Bus Terminus’
  • Walk (takes a few minutes) to Tsuen Wan West MTR

The hike ends in Route Twisk where you can grab a bite or hydrate yourself in the kiosk!

Alternatively, you can do the latter in the bus stop back at Tsuen Wan West MTR where there are nearby malls.

🔮 Opinions

Once you reach the top of Tai Mo Shan you are able to see a panoramic view of the New Territories. Don’t miss the chance to capture the moment by bringing a tripod.
