This book follows Charlene’s journey with heart-rendering emotion through the criminal justice and care system. It is a powerful novel that Patrice Lawrence wrote to show that people shouldn’t judge children because of the way they act, as there may be something upsetting going on in their life.

After Charlene’s mother dies, she is forced into the foster care system and left unable to see her sister- the person that she cares most about in the world. She is shunted between homes after doing something impulsive, and left feeling even more helpless.

I would rate this book 8/10 since it made me emotional knowing what Charlene was going through. I liked how the author thought about and included everything to make the story more realistic, e.g, her friends and the rules in the care system. This book is also dyslexia friendly which is great, as more people can enjoy it. I would recommend this book for children aged 12+ as there was minor use of violence.
