Quote by Marcus Tullius Cicero.

What is the importance of books in our life? Books play a essential role in everybody’s life by introducing them to a world of imagination, providing knowledge of the world, improving their reading, writing and communication skills as well as increasing memory and intelligence. The importance of books in our life cannot be underestimated, for they not only help in broadening our knowledge but also act as doorways to connecting us with the world around us. They function as survival kits, they influence us and leave an impact on us. Below are the benefits of reading books:

  • Gain valuable knowledge
  • Exercise your brain
  • Boost your focus
  • Sharpen your memory
  • Enjoy entertainments
  • Improve your ability to empathize
  • Enhance your communication skills
  • Reduce stress

You might have a family member who nags you to read books, now you know it for a reason!

Books are the most vital asset, and without them, there would be no past, present, or future. They explain who we are, where we come from and what we need to do to sustain our lives. Books are ‘the gateways to our world of imagination and creativity’. Reading books helps us to learn from others’ experiences and covers every aspect of life.

Books also entertain us with art so innovatively and creatively written that we can’t stop reading them until we reach the end of the book.

Types Of Books

There are many different types of books, from small like a cup and big like a refrigerator. There can be thin books and thick books. Different books have different subjects or genre.

What is a Genre

A genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing etc. Your favorite literary genre might be science fiction, and your favorite film genre might be horror flicks about schools! In music, genre refers to musical style such as jazz, salsa or rock. Below are some books genres:

  • Fable — e.g: ‘The Eagle and The Arrow by Aesop
  • Fairy Tale — e.g: ‘Cinderellaby Charles Perrault
  • Fantasy — e.g: ‘The Chronicles of Narniaby C.S Lewis
  • Fiction — e.g: ‘DOGMANby Dav Pilkey
  • Fiction in Verse — e.g: ‘Reboundby Kwame Alexander
  • Folklore — e.g: ‘Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
  • Historical Fiction — e.g: ‘Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Books are our best friends and the best way to know about the world. Reading books helps us change our perspective of the world. We have listened to a lot of stories from our elders, but with time, most of our families became limited to only a father, a mother and a child. Books can be a best friend, because they don’t judge us and because they can be very lovable.

Remember : ‘A room without books is a body without a soul.’ (Marcus Tullius Cicero)
