HKEK (now Future Works) at NFT.NYC 2022
On a backdrop of tragedy, conflict, and a looming global recession, one would be forgiven for thinking that overpriced JPEGs and “magic internet money” should be the last thing on our minds.
But proponents of a more decentralized world are more resolute than ever. Indeed, many see decentralization as a cure or at least an ingredient to solving our most vexing problems.
In a previous article, we talked about how NFTs have the potential to upend many industries and bring more freedom and personal sovereignty to many walks of life. This is the context for the 2022 edition of NFT.NYC, coming up on June 22–23. Touted by Coinbase as “The Superbowl of NFTs”, this conference is amongst the most significant events on the Web3 calendar, where top players in the Web3 space and beyond are looking to make headlines with their most recent innovations.
Many say that the current economic turmoil and “crypto winter” present a unique opportunity for Web3 to come of age, with the falling away of many “shit coins” and pretenders, making way for more robust, more impactful projects to have their day in the sun. We are excited to be contributing to some of these projects.

Civic.me
A core tenet of Future Works’ Web3 thesis is that any evolution of the internet should create more freedom, more trust, and more power in the hands of everyday people. In order for the C2C economy to be unlocked, we need to leverage the unhackable power of blockchain technologies to allow everyday people to transact with confidence, without shady middlemen, and without lining the pockets of unscrupulous silicon valley billionaires.
Our partner Civic has established themselves as a key arbiter of trust in Web3 through their identity management and verification platform. Now they are taking their vision to a global audience through their self-sovereign identity project called Civic.me.
In the short term, Civic.me is a place where you can gather all your digital assets, letting you present them in a way that expresses your own unique identity.
In the long term, Civic.me will be no less than an extension of your physical self into the digital world. Not only will it be a home for your self-sovereign identity, your crypto wallets, and your digital properties, but it will be your home for your self-expression and creativity. The ultimate vision is that it will be the only identity platform you will need for any Web3 application. Furthermore, it will provide a “trust profile”, allowing other people to verify your humanhood and your trustworthiness.

Future Quest
For several years, Future Works has been co-hosting the climate-focused event series called Future Horizon. The multi-day gathering assembles brilliant, life-loving minds and souls for the purpose of envisioning a future that is sustainable and symbiotic for all living beings. The last two events in Tuscany and Rio De Janeiro were so successful that the burgeoning community has decided to put their conversations and ideas into action.
Enter Future Quest, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that not only makes big promises on climate action, but rewards real, quantifiable action. The DAO is driven by “Vanguards”, who are leaders with the ability and funds to enact the kind of impact needed to halt the damage to our planet and regenerate. Through a series of “quests”, the DAO seeks to incentivize Future Horizon community members to act, while growing the community into a global movement.
