Tyler moved to the UK from Atlanta, Georgia in the USA. He is a part of the Commercial Sales team here in the Hootsuite London office and speaks to businesses daily about our Business and Enterprise offerings. I managed to get five minutes with Tyler — one of the busiest members of our team — to grab a coffee and discuss the new office, living the #HootsuiteLife and what it takes to work at Hootsuite UK.

Let’s start at the beginning. Why Hootsuite?

Tyler: I thought about this a lot and there’s so many ways I could answer this question. Hootsuite was initially a great opportunity for me to start my sales career after moving to the UK. The company itself has continued to experience massive growth and I wanted to be a part of that.

I quickly found that Hootsuite allowed me to focus on my career whilst having the opportunity to meet amazing people and enjoy an awesome work culture. I think my colleagues are awesome and I leave at the end of the day saying this is a great place to be. I know that I’m going to be supported in whatever I’m doing and I’ve got quality people around me every day.

What’s the best part of your job/day?

Tyler: For me, the best part of my job is really simple. It’s when I create opportunities to collaborate with businesses who are excited about what Hootsuite can do. I love exploring how Hootsuite can help businesses grow, and one of the best feelings is speaking with people who are genuinely excited about Hootsuite. Any day is a good day when I feel that I’ve helped show someone the power of our platform.

Are you excited about what we can do at Hootsuite?

Tyler: Of course! In sales, it’s always about the balance between the highs and the lows, the good days and the bad days. At Hootsuite, the good days overwhelmingly dominate the bad days. The opportunity to learn every day is extremely rewarding and I feel like I’m part of an organisation with a powerful vision. Our platform is doing so much to empower businesses and it’s enjoyable to share that with others.

Speaking of highs and lows, what’s the toughest challenge you’ve faced since starting at Hootsuite?

Tyler: Honestly, I think this is the most difficult question to answer. One of the biggest challenges for me has been adjusting my frame of mind to rely more on the vast amount of experience and resources here at Hootsuite. Often when I face a new challenge, I instantaneously think that it’s insurmountable and want to go at it all by myself. I started to realise that there is most likely someone within the organisation who has faced a similar challenge. I then started reaching out to some of the more experienced members of the team and was able to find positive solutions quickly.

What other resources are available to you at Hootsuite?

Tyler: After successfully working collaboratively and using my team’s experience as a resource, I started to explore other ways I could overcome challenges on my own like studying a recent case study or using our product white papers.

There is so much out there in terms of support and people with experience; it can be quite overwhelming. But once I realised that there is help out there, I learned how to look for it and it made my day to day a lot more manageable.

#HootsuiteLife — A hashtag we’re all familiar with here. What does that mean to you?

Tyler: Personally, for me it’s very straightforward. Living the “Hootsuite Life” means enjoying contributing to the success of the company and being a part of a bigger team. You’re never on your own here. We succeed together, we fail together. Hootsuite life is celebrating team wins and knowing that everything we do, we do together.

There’s always a great vibe in the office. We are all socially active in and outside the office and enjoy the events that we do. This comes from somewhere and ultimately I believe it comes from us all contributing together to the success of the business.

We’ve moved to Tower Bridge! What is the London office like?

Tyler: It feels like a breath of fresh air for everybody. I feel like we now have the office to back up our success. We’ve reached a particular point in the business and I feel like the office is us saying, “Look at what we’ve achieved. Look where we are at!”

You know in some ways when people talk about taking a trophy home, this office is that trophy. I always talk about winning and losing, maybe that’s an American ideal in that sense, and for me this office is the gold medal; the trophy that you bring home as a result of success. It’s really cool.

What piece of advice would you give to someone applying to work at Hootsuite?

Tyler: That’s an awesome question. I think that everything that we’ve covered in terms of the new office and the social environment is a massive reason for someone to want to work at Hootsuite, but that shouldn’t be the only reason to join the business.

The best piece of advice I can give someone is to understand what you want to accomplish before even interviewing. Set your goals and once you start, get to know your team and build your path to success. Have I mentioned using the resources around you? Utilise them every step of the way (that’s why they exist!) There is no right or wrong answer though, you know?

Whether you’re joining for experience, because you want to earn money as a salesperson, or even because you simply love social media, it’s important to establish from an early stage what your goals are and how you’re going to reach them. Set them, stick to them, and have fun whilst you do it! :)
