Announcing Hootsuite’s Engineering Core Values!

Back in December 2017, we started the process of defining the values that make up Hootsuite’s Engineering Team. Today, I’m excited to announce we have made that a reality.

Hootsuite’s culture is what makes it a tremendous place to work. As a company, our common purpose is to champion the power of human connection. We also share the following values: passion for customer success, lead with humility, build a better way, and grit in all we do.

Recently, we went a step further and created our Engineering Core Values. These core values form the foundation on which we perform work and how we conduct ourselves on the engineering team. By defining a set group of aspirational principles that are rooted within our company’s current culture, we can guide ourselves on how we should behave as an engineering team and interact with others.

These are the practices we should be using every day in everything we do.

What These Hootsuite Engineering Core Values Mean

  1. We are open, genuine, egoless and transparent. — We work better and produce better results when we treat others how we want to be treated. We aren’t afraid to speak openly and are humble. This results in a more productive, safe, and fun work environment.
  2. We do our best work as a global team by putting the team’s success over our own. — We don’t work in silos, we work in teams. The whole is greater than the sum of our parts. By working together, we utilize each others strengths and experiences uniting us a one team.
  3. We learn by sharing knowledge, seeking new challenges, and reflecting on failures. — Learning isn’t about knowing more, it’s about doing more. Iterate on what you already know to do it better, share knowledge, and learn from mistakes. The more we learn, the more we can innovate.
  4. We tenaciously pursue meaningful, rewarding, and high quality work that we take pride in. — It’s not just work, it’s about doing work you can be proud of. The quality of your work should meet the standards of Hootsuite, but also yourself.
  5. We care about our impact… and we measure it. — In order to build a better way, we need to know the impact of the work we do. Everything we build is based on qualitative measurement, and once built we are able to evaluate its performance and effectiveness.
  6. We all have the power to create change. — Changes isn’t a bad thing, its a break from the status quo, and this is what leads to innovation. Change should be embraced and everyone has the ability to propose changes. We all have the opportunity to speak and explore different ways to solve problems.
  7. We design and build for our users. — Use customer value to unite product, design, and development goals. Our customers are the reason we come to work every day and this is who we build for.
