There is nothing better than discovering the typical foods that are unique to a region. Malaga has a large range of local food products like olives, almonds, grapes and raisins, sweet wine, olive oil, fish. You will get delicious baked goods also. Here are some typical foods that you must try when you visit Malaga.

  1. Gazpachuelo Malagueño

One of the most typical dishes in Malaga. This soup is fishermen dish, living in the area called El Palo. It is a poor man’s dish, made with fish, potatoes, water, salt, mayonnaise, and wine vinegar. Over time, they began to add pieces of shrimp, langoustines or clams. Unlike tomato gazpacho, it is a warm soup usually eaten in the winter. It has hard-boiled egg and toast on the plate to go with it.

2. Plato de Los Montes de Malaga (Dish of the Mountains of Malaga)

This dish is a combination plate i.e. it has lots of food items on a plate. These dish has fried potatoes, a fried egg, chorizo, morcilla (black sausage), fried green peppers and pork in “Manteca colorá”. Manteca colorá means lard mixed with paprika and other spices to preserve the meat. It is a heavy dish and also best for winter.

3. Porra Antequerana

This soup contains bread and tomato to thicken it instead of water, so it’s a much heartier version. Usually, it has a chopped hard-boiled egg, ham and tuna fish on top. The soup gets its name from the town of Antequera, another city in the province of Malaga.

4. Espeto

These are sardines (small oily fish) that are skewer and roasted over a barbecue pit. This is a dish particularly found near or on the beaches. These is a must try dish from Malaga. You can enjoy it sitting on the beach with a cold drink.

5. Ensalada Malagueña

This typical salad from Malaga is a cold potato salad made with salt cod, onion, green olives, and oranges. A great starter for a meal, especially in the spring and summer.

6. Almendras Fritas

Almendras Fritas means fried salted almonds which are for sell on many streets of Malaga. They go very well with cheese and a glass of wine.

7. Ajoblanco

Kind of soup brought here by the Moors (Muslim tribes from North Africa). Despite its name which translates to “white garlic,” it’s cooked using ground up almonds. They peel almonds and toast it, then mix it with olive oil and garlic. It is often served with white muscatel grapes on top.

8. Pipirrana

This is a cold salad made from chopped red pepper, green pepper, tomato, onion, olives, tuna, and mussels dressed with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. It is perfect for eating during long, hot summers of Malaga.
