Susan wore very thick glasses, and her clothes were often unkempt, reflecting her family’s struggles.

She hunched her shoulders to make herself smaller, guarding herself from abuse. Her appearance and shyness made friendships nearly impossible, so no one tried.

During recess, as she sat alone, Rick, a new student, approached soccer ball in hand.

“Want to play?” he asked, his smile genuine.

Shocked, Susan hesitated, then nodded. As they kicked the ball, laughter replaced her usual solitude.

Rick’s simple act of kindness showed their peers that true friendship values hearts over appearances, transforming Susan’s world one smile at a time.
