Unbreakable Bonds: When Friends Become Family!
When your family moves on ahead, who do you have left?
There are times when circumstances in life give us friends who become like family. They are people who have known us from our beginnings, walk through life with us and hold space for our happiness like no other.
These friends, whose soul journeys are wrapped up in our own, provide us with a sense of grounding unlike that of a sibling, parent or relative. We know where we came from because we created history together outside of our family unit. Gathering with these friends is like holding a mirror to our soul and saying hello to the who of who we are.
Seven of the girls in the photograph above are the extended family I speak of for me. We are 4 and 5 years old in the photo. Two girls I met at birth, three in Kindergarten, one in Grade 1. We call ourselves the G7.
What I am grateful for with these girlfriends is the authenticity of our connection. We don’t agree on everything with fake smiles and niceties. We hold space for heated discussions on topics we feel passionate about. It’s sometimes hard to get a word in edgewise, and we certainly don’t conclude with a unified view. We agree to disagree. Or let a conversation go, knowing we will have another chance to lay out our point of view the next time…
