Anna Karina In London.
Last week Anna Karina, the icon of the nouvelle vague, visited London as part of the British Film Institute’s ongoing season of work by Jean-Luc Godard. Karina formed an integral part of Godard’s early career, with the numerous films made by the two, which reach from Le petit soldat through to Made In U.S.A. amongst his most popular of all.
Karina was on great form that day. She was as spritely and mischievous in 2016 as she was some fifty years ago on-screen. Following screenings of Band Of Outsiders, Le Mepris and Vivre Sa Vie Karina spoke to the audience. I’ve embedded the Q&A session from Band Of Outsiders below. What struck me personally most about Karina was the affection and regard with which she held her former husband. The breakdown of their marriage is the stuff of cinematic infamy, so one might be surprised to learn just how keenly she speaks of him.
