Two legends of the screen passed away over the weekend, and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that.

In Emmanuelle Riva there was an icon of the French cinema. Her turn in Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima mon amour was one for the ages, while Michael Hanake’s Amour is a popular late-period highlight.

In John Hurt there was a British institution. A man for all seasons, if you’ll excuse the pun, Hurt shone whenever a camera was placed in front of him, his body of work a herculean effort of our national cinema.

My thoughts are with those closest to them.
