O’ Lonely Man. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love comes to Blu-ray today. I’ve written extensively of my love for the film in the past, but thought it worth reiterating in light of this release, and in the wake of a screening of said disc at the weekend.

With every passing viewing of Punch Drunk Love something new comes to the fore. This time around it struck me just how affecting a paean to loneliness the film is. I guess that’s a natural extension to the hyper-realist deconstruction of the man-child comedies of star Adam Sandler that forms the backbone of Punch Drunk Love’s very being. Criterion’s release of the film is bona-fide revelatory, especially when placed next to earlier iterations of the movie home video.
