The Criterion Memorandum For May 2017.

May 2017 looks set to be one of the strongest monthly line-ups in the history of the company.

From established auteurs to modern classics, it truly is a stacked month. Top of the pile is a long-awaited high-definition reissue of Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, one of the grand masterpieces of world cinema and an all-time top tenner of this writer.

Also long-awaited is Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World, one of the great comic-book movies, and one of the real highlights of the strain of late-90s, early 2000s pictures that revolved around the curiosities of youth. Daniel Clowes himself provides the artwork.

Jacques Audiard’s controversial Palme d’Or winner Dheepan makes for a contemporary entry into the Criterion Collection, we liked it more than most.

Volume two of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project would fill a month in itself, with works from filmmakers like Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Edward Yang contained within. Full details on all six included titles can be found here.

Criterion has been kind to Orson Welles of late, with the newly-announced Othello joininh the recently released Chimes At Midnight and The Immortal Story. Both the European and US cuts of the film are included on an impressive looking disc that also includes input from Welles scholar and superfan Simon Callow, amongst others.

A Blu-ray rerelease of Ozu’s Good Morning rounds out the month. The artwork for this batch of releases is attached below.
