A Portrait of Hope in Winter

A Year of Sonnets — 028/365

Perhaps the snow will muffle mourning songs
that seem to seep, like petrichor from earth,
a constant grief, an echo of the wrongs
that stripped away each memory of mirth
until a tortured dust remained. Perhaps
this quiet white brings healing in its wake,
a salve against malignancy, relapse,
and weakness — pad us, that we never break.
