Finding Yourself is a Lifelong Process

Listen, I hate the title I just wrote above. It sounds so cliche’ and post modern. It’s like a cop out of sorts. One of those things people say, despite the fact they have no idea what it even means. Something you hear said at a spin class or by a dude with a man bun, who owns a pair of Sperry’s in every color. Okay, I think I’ve made my point.

But as trendy or as hipster-ish as my title may sound at first, it’s actually a very valuable little nugget of wisdom. From the time you are a child, expectations are constantly being put on you, both consciously and subconsciously. First, what high school you’re going to attend, then what college and career path. You’re expected to know what you want to do with the rest of your life before you’re legally allowed to have a drink. Despite the fact thinking about what you want to do with the rest of your life is an activity that could drive anyone to drink.

We are ever evolving and growing as people. We grow tired of, as well as out of things. We get used to our lives being a certain way, right before they change again. We’re constantly adapting to the ever changing set of circumstances around us and accounting for new variables on an almost daily basis. It’s so easy to get side tracked or lose focus. We make so many mistakes along the way, sometimes it feels like we’re behind everyone — in everything. But I assure you, nobody has it all figured out. Half of us are just making it up as we go along and you know what — that’s okay. Because we’re moving forward, we’re proactive to our approach in life and doing our best. Well, mostly anyway.

Struggle and hardships are necessary parts of any success that’s worth finding. If you feel as lost as I have, so many times in life over, there’s a good chance you’re being too hard on yourself. You’re attaching unnecessary stress to the things you want to achieve and have set out to do. Your perspective is probably just as screwed up as mine has been — you’re overthinking it. And I promise you, anxiety and overthinking never helped anyone accomplish anything. But they’ve certainly been the cause of a lot of pain and regret.

Sometimes I write things because I need to read and hear them — and I figure if I need to hear them, there’s a good chance there’s a thousand others just like me who could benefit from them as well. Because as different as we all may look, feel and think — our struggle to find ourselves is what we all have in common. We’re all just searching for who we might one day be, or former versions of ourselves we loved and kind of miss.

All I know is my story is not yet complete, it’s still very much being written, through who I am when I wake up each day and what I do with my time here on this earth. I’m still very much searching for myself and I’m okay with that, because it means I’m at least actively looking.
