365 Writing Prompt

Mid-August 2016 we were preparing to make the journey to our new home in Iowa. We spent our last two days in Phoenix on lock down because five gunman affiliated with two separate crimes were being hunted by police. We could hear the helicopters circle above us all day and their spotlights flashed through our windows at night.

The summer of 2016 was the year Phoenix broke its 34 day record for 110+ degrees. It was hot, burning hot, like you’d imagine living on another planet hot, or at least that’s what it felt like to me.

When the day finally arrived for us to move we packed up the personal items we would need while traveling across country to Iowa. We also packed up our eight cats and our snake, Cornelius. Cornelius proved the most patient and well behaved of our travel buddies. Dude didn’t make a peep the entire trip.

The trip was quite a challenge with eight cats and instead of enjoying the sights we rushed across the blue lines of interstate Rand McNally had laid out for us. When we pulled into the driveway of our new home in Small Town, Iowa we were grateful the drive was over and even more grateful we no longer lived in Phoenix.
