Wearing My Panties in Public

Writing Prompt: What societal standard has a negative impact on you?
Let’s be real, what’s the big deal about wearing your underwear in public? It’s a societal standard for both men and women that you just don’t do it.
It’s not appropriate. People will stare at you. People will whisper shit talk about you when they think you can’t hear what they’re saying. People will gossip to all their friends, “Dude, I saw this chick in town sporting her panties.”
You’ll be rejected from entering every public place. “Uh, excuse me, you can’t wear that in here,” they’ll say. I’ll, of course, push their boundaries and question why. “But I’d be wearing them under my pants if I were wearing pants so technically that means I’d be wearing them in here.”
The fact is, if we were wearing bathing suits chances are it would be acceptable- even if I were wearing a bikini.
“Oh! She must be on her way home from swim practice,” they’ll say. “She must have been out tanning,” they’ll say.
“Oh! He just stopped in for a twelve pack on his way to a pool party,” they’ll say. “He’s headed to the lake to go boating,” they’ll say.
C’mon, really? It’s not like I’m walking around in a G-string. I’m wearing full coverage cotton. I’m wearing boy cut style.
I’d look exactly the same if it were spandex shorts- which no one should ever wear spandex by the way. I don’t care what yoga class you just went to. It doesn’t look good on anyone of any gender, shape or size. Spandex should be banned from the earth.
I walk around my house in my underwear. I walk around my yard in my underwear. I sleep in my underwear, eat in my underwear, exercise in my underwear, watch a movie, read, write. I answer the door wearing my underwear when someone rings the bell.
I’m comfortable wearing my underwear. The question is, why isn’t society comfortable with me wearing my underwear?
