What if?
The future is unseeable.
The past is clouded by time and story.
Even this moment is uncertain.
I have lived in ‘what if’ for a lifetime.
Maybe we all do.
What if the good?
What if the awful?
I could live forever in poverty.
I could die tomorrow in new wealth.
‘What if’ has stopped me.
And made me try harder.
It has broken my mind
And given me the courage to fix it.
‘What if’ is curiosity that seeks to know
And the imagination of disasters.
It brought us out of a wilderness
And made us fear our neighbors.
‘What if’ is doubt
But never certainty.
‘What if’ is a trickster.
Allowing distant bright colors to shine.
Sometimes dimming them as I approach.
It has led me to write.
And discouraged me to publish.
It gives options
But no answers.
The trickster knows chaos
And weaves it through its fingers.
Friend or Foe
the trickster is there,
And makes itself at home.
It plays on the stories we tell ourselves
Emphasizing the emotions
That we chose.
What if…?
