We’re ready for Titlis, the final HOPR testnet before we launch our mainnet! This guide will tell you what to expect, how to get started, and what you’ll need to do to claim your HOPR tokens once this testnet is over.

Titlis will run from 3 pm CET on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021 to 3 pm CET on Thursday, January 21st, 2021. The testnet will run on Binance Smart Chain. Everyone who participates by completing the feedback form will receive a share of the 400,000 HOPR bounty fund.

Full instructions and onboarding will be available in our Telegram channel once Titlis launches.

What is the Titlis Testnet?

The primary goal of Titlis is to test the updated version of the HOPR protocol at a larger scale than we can achieve internally. We’re asking community members to test a node on their home device or VPS, perform some simple quality assurance (QA) tests and interactions with other nodes, then report their findings. The dev team will use this information to update the protocol.

By participating, you’ll learn how HOPR nodes work in preparation for our imminent mainnet launch. You’ll also receive a share of the 400,000 HOPR prize fund, and will be eligible to participate in a very exciting event to be revealed once the testnet ends.

What’s New in Titlis?

The browser-based user interface of our hoprd client running the Titlis testnet

The main change is the update from the standalone HOPR Chat app to browser-based access to our hoprd daemon, which will be familiar to AVADO users.

Another major change is that payment channels open automatically once your node is funded, the first example of our new node strategies to build out the network. We have also implemented the first automatic message routing along these channels.

This is our first testnet where we’re running the payment layer and message layer simultaneously, so we’re expecting lots of interesting data on how those interact.

Claiming Your Earnings

When you fill in the Titlis feedback form, you’ll be asked for a Discord ID. This will be how we will contact you to send your HOPR tokens after mainnet launch. If you’ve participated in previous testnets, including the short testing in December, make sure you provide the same Discord ID. You’ll receive a bonus as a reward for your loyalty.

I’m New to HOPR Testnets: How Do I Get Started?

The hopr interactive onboarding form.

Once the testnet launches, just head to our Telegram channel and follow the instructions there. You’ll need to follow our interactive onboarding guide to set up, fund and test your node. If you have any questions, please ask our ambassadors. We also have community channels in almost a dozen different languages.

I Participated In Mainz Alpha in December, What Should I Do?

If you participated in our rapid-fire testing in December and filled in the feedback form, we still need your help. Please run a new node and complete the QA form again, as it will be slightly different this time.

Will There Be Tasks?

We know how much the community enjoyed the daily tasks in our previous testnet, Basódino, but those won’t be returning this time, unfortunately. Titlis is much shorter than Basódino was, and the switch from Hopr Chat to hoprd is already a lot for people to engage with. So we’re keeping things tech-focused this time. But games and tasks will return in future events. Even after mainnet launches, we’re going to be running a robust testing infrastructure in parallel to test new features.

What’s In It For Me?

Despite scaling back the gamification for the time being, Titlis is still incentivized! There are 400,000 HOPR tokens available, divided evenly between all participants who complete the final feedback form and provide a valid ETH address. Tokens will be distributed after mainnet launch.

Participants from Titlis will also be eligible to participate in a very exciting event to be revealed once the testnet ends.

We’re enforcing a strict one person, one node policy this time. Anyone found trying to claim rewards for more than one node will not receive a payout.

What are the OS / System Requirements?

You can participate in Titlis from your home device running MacOS or Linux. Windows should also work, but we don’t have dedicated setup instructions yet. You can also run a node from a virtual private server (VPS) in the cloud. Please ensure your server has at least 2GB of RAM. This testnet is also open to all of our AVADO users.

If you’re an experienced user and would like to try running a node from a different device, we definitely encourage that and would love your feedback, but we won’t be able to offer direct instructions or support.

It’s important to set expectations correctly: we don’t expect this to work seamlessly for everyone. For some people, it may not even work at all, depending on your device and Internet setup. That’s fine! The point of this testnet is to assess general stability and look for edge cases where things don’t work.

No matter what your experience, please complete the feedback form at the end of the testnet so we can give the dev team as much information as possible about how this version of HOPR behaves in the wild.

What’s the Special Event?

I’m afraid we can’t give you any more information yet, except that it’s something untried in crypto before, and the testnet is the only way to get access. You won’t want to miss it!

Look forward to seeing you in the testnet,

José Aguinaga,
