The Sixth HOPR DAO experiment has now ended. Thanks to everyone who participated on the forum and the almost 300 voters!

This was our fastest experiment yet, with just a week between the announcement and the conclusion. We continue to adjust and refine our DAO processes to try and find the right mix between dynamism, autonomy, and ensuring everyone’s voice is properly captured.

The topic this time round was bug bounties. The HOPR Association will be setting up a bug bounty on the Hats Finance platform and funding it with 1m HOPR tokens. Since Hats takes a decentralized approach to bug bounties, it made sense to ask the DAO to contribute too.

You can hear more about the background and discussion of decentralized bug bounties and token security in our Twitter Space recording. Thanks to the Hats team for joining and your insights.

Proposals

The primary proposal was whether the DAO should contribute to a bug bounty vault on https://hats.finance

The secondary proposal asked how many tokens the DAO should contribute.

This would only come into effect if the primary proposal passed.

Results

As always, the vote took place on Snapshot with quadratic voting applied to smooth out the effect of larger token holders.

The primary proposal passed almost unanimously.

Even after applying quadratic voting, the result was 95.53% in favour, an almost unanimous result

The secondary proposal was closer. In the end the winning option was to contribute 1m HOPR tokens, with 59.01% of the vote. This matches the HOPR Association’s contribution.

Technical Issues

Although the discussion started well and the Twitter Space was excellent, the day of the vote saw some technical issues.

First, there was delay in setting up the votes on Snapshot. A problem at TheGraph meant the subgraph for our staking program fell out of sync, making it impossible to calculate people’s vote power. This was eventually resolved by forcing an earlier snapshot where the subgraph was still operational. This did mean that the vote power calculation was 3hrs out of date, but looking at the data no votes were affected.

At the same time, a backend issue with our new forum setup took the forum out of action for almost twelve hours.

Apologies for the disruption on both fronts — we’re looking into making our processes more robust for next time round.

Analysis

The discussion period saw fewer participants than usual. Just 59 people met the criteria for being an active participant.

There may be a few explanations for this:

- The experiment was announced at very short notice compared to previous iterations
- The technical issues may have discouraged participation
- The topic was fairly narrow, with little disagreement, so there simply wasn’t much to discuss
- The Twitter Space was comprehensive, and provided a lot of context that would normally have been worked through in the discussion phase
- The vote ran almost concurrently with the discussion phase, and perhaps people voted as soon as possible and then stopped participating

Despite the reduced numbers, the participation was engaging and constructive.

Exactly 299 addresses voted in each vote. This is on a par with previous votes, so it’s interesting to note the discrepancy between the discussion and vote numbers. Whatever was responsible for depressing discussion participation does not seem to have carried over to the vote, including the technical issues.

It’s also surprising that both votes had the same participation. People who voted NO in the primary vote should logically have not voted in the secondary vote (since they didn’t want to contribute to the vault at all, none of the contribution amounts should be suitable). But it seems like everyone voted for both proposals.

It may be that the rewards were not communicated clearly enough: people may have voted in both fearing that they would receive reduced or no rewards.

Rewards

Speaking of rewards, the participation levels will be calculated this week and the NFT ranks assigned. Once this is done, distribution will follow shortly afterwards.

Thanks again to everyone for their participation, and a particular thanks to our friends at Hats Finance for joining the Twitter Space and all their behind the scenes discussions and help.
