After thousands of hours of hard work by our amazing tech team, we’re about to open up our latest release: Monte Rosa. This will be the first stage in a months’ long initiative to scale up the HOPR network and expand the feature set. We have robust internal testing procedures, but to truly stress-test HOPR at scale and across a variety of setups, we need YOU!

This blog post will tell you everything you need to know about this exciting phase of HOPR’s rollout: what the network registry is, how you can access it, and what rewards you can expect for participating.

The HOPR Network Registry

To allow for incremental scaling, we have temporarily implemented a network registry. This is managed via a smart contract, and only nodes with Peer IDs on the registry will be able to connect with each other.

The registry links a particular address in the HOPR staking contract with the peer ID within the HOPR network. In general, having network registry access allows you to register exactly one HOPR node, although you can deregister a node and register a new one (for example, if you want to switch devices).

This has been necessary because in previous releases, thousands of enthusiastic community members would join in the first hours and the nodes would stop functioning because of the load.

Obviously in the long run the HOPR network needs to be able to handle such loads, and definitely should not be permissioned. But temporarily introducing this cap allows us to create a stable network environment where we can properly test other aspects of the protocol without being overwhelmed by memory issues.

This has already proved extremely successful in internal testing, with extremely stable networks of up to 100 nodes running very smoothly.

The registry will initially start with 30 slots for community access (with around the same number controlled by the HOPR team for development, debugging and network monitoring purposes). As we reach our stability thresholds we hope to rapidly increase the number of available slots and also spin up parallel networks.

Network Registry NFTs

You can get access to the registry by controlling a special type of HOPR Boost NFT: the Network Registry NFT. These are functionally equivalent to our other boost NFTs, and if you receive one you can stake it via our staking UI at https://stake.hoprnet.org

Note that Network Registry NFTs have a 0% APR boost, so they provide no value on their own. However, if you join the network registry and run a HOPR node you’ll be eligible for the Monte Rosa NFT, one of our highest boost NFTs yet.

As we test and confirm the stability of the network, we’ll gradually expand the network registry, giving more and more people access and scaling the HOPR network. Reward NFTs will be issued at regular intervals, so those further down the waitlist won’t miss out.

Network Registry Waitlist

To ensure that precious registry slots don’t go to waste, access to the waitlist will be limited to people who stake at least 2,000 HOPR and who pre-register their interest by filling in this form. Every eligible staking address will be ranked according to the number and rank of HOPR boost NFTs staked. Ties will be broken by stake amount. There will also be priority access for owners of HOPR branded AVADO and DAppNode devices, and we will occasionally reward random community members with priority access as part of ongoing promotions and marketing.

Bounty hunters, buidlers and participants in HOPR hackathons may also be eligible for different ranks of Network Registry NFTs which allow you to skip the waitlist and register more than one node. However, they will not be eligible to receive the ongoing testing rewards.

The initial waitlist will be initially capped at 400. We’ll reopen it as the network registry expands and at certain milestones such as the end of the staking season.

Priority Access

In general, as the network registry expands and slots open, Network Registry NFTs will be sent to the next eligible addresses on the waitlist. However, there are a few ways to reduce the wait times and get faster access to the network.

  • Owners of HOPR branded AVADO and DAppNode
  • Winners of special marketing promotions

The distribution of these NFTs is subject to change, but currently the plan is that for every 20 Network registry NFTs issued, three will be given to AVADO owners, two to DAppNode owners and one to a random community member. For hardware node owners, distribution will be determined based on relative position in the waitlist. Only one NFT can be received this way (i.e., if you receive an NFT for owning a hardware node, and then your position in the waitlist is reached organically, you don’t receive a second one).

For random winners, all other access criteria still apply (i.e., must have staked over 2,000 HOPR tokens, must have registered interest via the waitlist form).

Bounty hunters, developers and other people building on top of HOPR, including participants in HOPR hackathons will also be able to get access to the network. This will happen via different ranks of Network Registry NFT (e.g., the Developer rank). These will often allow more than one node to be registered, to facilitate development. However, holders of these NFTs will NOT be eligible to receive any extra NFTs or rewards.

Accessing the Network

Once your slot on the waitlist comes up and you receive your NFT, you’ll need to stake it and register a HOPR node in the network registry. Full instructions can be found in our recently updated docs.

Rewards

Node runners will be rewarded with some of our most valuable HOPR boost NFTs to date. The rank of NFT you receive will depend on your cumulative node uptime, so make sure to keep checking on the waitlist status and join the network as soon as you can!

Extra DAO rewards

As part of our second DAO experiment, the DAO voted to distribute DAI to HOPR stakers and node runners. These DAI will be distributed as part of the early phase of Monte Rosa testing: half will go to the first node runners, while the rest will be split between the other addresses on the waitlist. So make sure to register your interest if you want a share of these extra rewards!

We’re excited that you’ll soon be able to get your hands on the Monte Rosa release and see the enormous improvements. If you find yourself on the waitlist, please be patient: we’ll be working to expand the network registry as fast as we can. In the meantime, tools such as Playground will still give everyone a chance to try out HOPR and its ever-growing array of dApps.
