The power of a leader’s voice comes from two tools. Whether he or she wants to or not, the leader is always using these tools. However, if misused, these tools can be harmful by creating confusion and chaos. They are the bullhorn and the whip.

Leaders always talk through a bullhorn. A leader’s voice is always amplified. Even if soft-spoken, a leader is undoubtedly heard. The leader’s words ripple far beyond those physically present to hear them.

As a leader, you must assume that everyone can hear you when you are speaking— even behind closed doors. Those present and listening will interpret what you say and spread the message to those not present.

Command and control your message. Be clear in your purpose, mission, and values. Everyone is listening and will hear you.

Leaders always carry a whip. Just a flick of the wrist will cause the end of a whip to snap. This is similar to how a leader’s words will cause people to act.

As a leader, you must assume that when you say ‘go’, people will go. Do they know where they are going? Do you know where they are going? Do not let your verbalized, fleeting thoughts cause wasted energy and unorganized action.

Communicate consciously and intentionally. Be deliberate when casting your priorities and intent. Everyone will jump when you say “jump.”

Your voice is powerful enough to make people stop what they’re doing and listen. Your voice is powerful enough to make people follow. Your voice is powerful enough to make people believe. Be careful with your words.
