You Can’t Lead Without It

You can avoid it. You can operate as if it doesn’t matter. But you can’t deny the lack of it is holding you back. Not only is it holding you back, but the lack of it is also holding your team back.

You know what it is. You just won’t acknowledge it. You don’t acknowledge it because if you did, you’d give it credence. You’d be admitting to its relevance. So, you avoid it.

“It’s a bunch of fluff,” you say. Recognizing its value would force you to do the hard work of communicating it.

“Talent matters more,” you say. You might be right. But you still can’t do without it.

“Where are we headed,” your team asks.

They ask because they need it. So why won’t you give it to them? After all, you’re the only one who has it.

The teams that outperform you probably have it. Don’t get upset. You’ve made the choice to do without it.

You read about it in a book. You’ve read about it in a lot of books. It made sense. You’ve heard others testify to its value. “They’re soft,” you think.

Maxwell calls it the Law of Navigation. Those who fail to follow it may perish. It’s irrefutable.

Sinek says it’s only actionable if we share it. “Without sharing, it’s just a figment of our imagination,” he says.

“Without it,” said King Solomon, “the people will run wild.” But what did he know?

Keller believed that nothing could be worse than having sight and not seeing it.

How do you define it?

Vision (vi-zhun): 1. The ability to see. 2. The image or insight of how something could or should be in the future.

Great leaders cast it so their team can fulfill it.
