A Mini Reflection

Maybe we are missing the point when we ask: “What is the purpose of love?” As human beings we are blessed with reason and for that, we are driven to pry and assign reasonable explanations to our experiences. Even in the name of science we reason with the fact that our biology leads us to seek each other out and multiply. But what if for a second we entertain the idea that love has no reason, no purpose, but a form in itself higher than mere animalistic and biological urges. A form that does not fit in any other category whether scientific or rhetorical; nor does it fit with the urges that drive other species to mate.

After all, as humans, we are not exactly animals nor are we gods — beings of higher nature free from pain and desires — but rather are species in between and for that, we are born with this thing called love. In this unique trait of being human, we love our partners after that initial animalistic attraction and once it turns into love, it becomes a pseudo-godly form where we love for no other purpose but love itself.

Love in this way is therefore a unique gift of nature we humans enjoy for its own sake. Maybe by forgoing the question of what the purpose of love is altogether, we can truly love without reserve and when it doesn’t work out, we can move on without pain — the pain that comes from our own failure to understand the nature of love; where we had set aside a special purpose and reason for why we loved another in the first place.
