I. Death Wielded an Ax
It was Children’s Night at Church that night. We kids looked forward to it all year. Getting to show off all we had learned in Sunday School that past year to our parents was always great fun. Especially with all the tools Teacher allowed us to use paints, glues, cardboard, paper, skits, and so much else. It was a party for us at Church and after where we were usually rewarded with treats at home. Sometimes Daddy would even spend a lot on expensive candy for us. This year’s Children’s Night was no different from last year’s, though the Titanic Disaster did keep people in our small town occupied by staying in the papers constantly. So did our guest preacher, the Reverend Lyn George Jacklin Kelly. He was a tiny man with beady little eyes that seemed to bore straight through you and he couldn’t take those eyes off me throughout our skit on the Virgin Birth. I played the Virgin Mary and sensed my dress was hemmed too high. Teacher didn’t listen to my concerns though.
