The urban legend is a modern folklore genre, which often consists of fictional stories associated with macabre or supernatural elements. Urban legends are often rooted in local history and popular culture. For example, Disney has attracted several urban legends, as people love a sinister story that taints the family-friendly image of the happiest place on Earth.

Mowgli’s Palace

This story is amongst the most infamous of urban legends circulating the internet regarding an abandoned Disney resort. According to legend, there were allegedly plans to open a new Disney resort near the Emerald Isle in North Carolina. This resort was inspired by the classic Disney film The Jungle Book, with a massive palace in the center.

The History

Reportedly the project had problems from the very start. Disney required a large land area for the resort, with some scandal surrounding the development. The local state government supposedly made a deal with Disney and claimed: “eminent domain” of the locals’ land and houses. The company promised job creation as well as a boost to tourism.
