On Wednesday 30th January we hosted the Scala Central meet-up at the Expedia Group offices in Angel, London.

Scala Central has been running for nearly 3 years now and is an incredible source of Scala knowledge and talent. Hotels.com have several teams writing applications in Scala so it was a perfect match for us to host.

The evening began with drinks and networking before the main talks began.

Greg Dorrell – Effect Types: What? Why? Which one?

Greg is a former Hotels.com employee and has since moved to another Expedia Group company, HomeAway. To summarise his talk, Scala Future is side effect producing as when it is created it immediately performs the operation within it. Cats IO, ScalaZ IO and Monix Task are all alternatives which provide similar functionality but lazily evaluate the operation. This means the act of execution can be separated from the definition.

Leszek Sliwko – Drone Delivery Queue

Leszek followed with his talk on his experience of release/build processes and how this was set up in his team. His talk was not only relatable to Scala Developers, but could also be applicable for those working with other technologies too.

Our annual Scala meetup was really excellent and we love supporting the Scala community here at Hotels.com .
