I’ll Have a HotFlash with a Side of Inspiration

Welcome to my HotFlash. Was that too intimate of a way to start? Let me try again.

Welcome to HotFlash, a new publication on Medium that focusses on the roller coaster ride that embodies life for those of us nearing or in the midst of menopause. The hormonal swings and accompanying stress, anxiety, and irritability can make us feel downright crazy. Owning that charming biological fact is an important part of this phase of life. Hence, the publication’s name - HotFlash.

The concept of a hot flash is not just an uncomfortable feeling with the perk of keeping you awake at night, it’s also energy and power. I am working on harnessing all that energy so I can shoot it from my hands and ignite things! (Think Emma and Regina in Once Upon a Time!) I’ll let you know how that goes…

We are more than our hormones though, even when they insist they are the ones in charge. This stage of life is also about other transitions, not just the obvious physical ones tied in with menopause. We are dealing with changing family roles as our children grow up and our parents grow old. We may be reevaluating our careers — seeking something more meaningful and fulfilling than we’ve spent much of our lives doing. Perhaps we are feeling the pull of pursuing hobbies cast aside long ago or investigating new ones, creating new friendships, or traveling while we are still young enough to really enjoy it.

You won’t find much here about general health, eating properly, getting more exercise or fashion tips for those nearing 50. What you will find are personal experiences of menopause, stories of seeking that ‘something more’ and inspirational people and ideas for those of us in our HotFlash years.

I was relieved to find that many of my struggles over the past few years are normal parts of menopause. It made me feel more sane and less alone. I hope I can do that for you.

HotFlash — Don’t just smolder — ignite!
