THIS DAY IN HISTORY-TRAVEL
One Small Step for Man — One Giant Leap for Mankind
50 years ago Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon
On this day in history 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong walked on the surface of the moon and announced to the world, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
It was the first time mankind stepped on alien soil. It ushered in a new reality; humanity could reach other planets in search of life and answers to our fundamental questions.
As a child, I had a particular fascination with space and astronomy. If you have been reading me you may have already figured this out! I wanted to believe someday we would reach the stars, just like in Star Trek, and perhaps, find a peaceful existence seeking knowledge without limitations.
One of my favorite places to go was the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. This strangely shaped museum had artifacts from space, Neil Armstrong’s mementos, Lear jet 28, and the F5D Skylancer he flew. I especially loved the planetarium, where you could lie down on the carpeted stairs and watch the show.
