Note from the Editor: Andrew Lee is a photography student at Columbia College Chicago. We first met at the DIY venue Dandelion in Logan Square — home of the chill rock n roll dog in the top row of photos. Andrew and I go to a lot of the same shows, following Chicago’s garage rock scene in basements and living rooms across the city. Considering how sweaty and cramped and wild these shows can get, Andrew does an impressive job of capturing the energy of the crowd and the performers.

These photos were taken at DIY venues including Ratthouse, Wally’s World, Albion House, The Flowershop, The Void, Animal Kingdom, Dandelion, and a couple of other venues around the University of Chicago and University of Illinois. (The cover photo is from the last house show in Bucktown at Benny’s of The Symposium in May 2015, where I went to my first house show, and where The Symposium, Modern Vices, The Walters, Yoko and the Oh No’s, Twin Peaks and The Orwells would play.) Camera equipment includes a Nikon D600, a 17–35 wide angle lens, and a 18–105 zoom lens and an sb-600 external flash.

If you want to know what today’s Chicago rock n roll looks like, it’s this. Click on the photos to enlarge.
