Hi, we’re How This Works co (with a gift for you)
Grand opening, soft opening, re-opening, reprise — where did we put those giant scissors again?
While the work we do at How This Works co isn’t new, we’re officially hit the start button now — what’s that saying about the best time to plant a tree? Well, here we are.
Our journey began with the launch of the How This Works podcast (now called the How This Works show) was launched. But even before that, I started doing fractional design work for Shep in 2017, with freelancing even earlier that that. What started on the side and smaller, is now evolving into something bigger and more focused.
This new chapter brings the same commitment to craft and quality through the refined lens of service and product design, workshop facilitation, and team management.
So, grab one end of these giant scissors, will you? We’ll pose for some pictures. And stick around for a gift at the end!
What we do at How This Works co
I’m still focusing on what I do best as a design pro — service design and product design — and putting people first. That might be obvious as we talk about human-centric, user-centric, lots of kinds of centricities in design but we think it’s absolutely crucial to put 👏 people 👏 first. And by people, we mean a whole host of people: those people on the project, your employees, your customers. Because strong, connected teams are the foundation of almost every successful product and service. I think that’s what winning looks like.
Our main areas of work are about tackling complex problems, aligning siloed teams, and carving out a clear path forward for groups and businesses. And we do this in three people-first ways:
Service & product design
Customer-centered, innovative experiences that align with your business goals, ensuring impactful changes.
Workshop facilitation
In conjunction with the design doing, we par with it collaborative workshops that solve complex problems, align teams, and drive clarity, from quick sessions to multi-week engagements.
Team management & growth
Building strong, cohesive teams by fostering growth, improving dynamics, and preserving culture, ensuring your team’s strengths shine as you grow and scale.
How we work
Our process begins with a simple yet powerful question: “How does this work for you?” We start by exploring your challenges and opportunities, aligning our work with your company’s objectives and key results (OKRs).
Then, we do the work right.
(See what we did there? With the question? And our company name?)
How might we start a conversation?
Yes, thank you for asking. Let’s talk about what success looks like for you. Schedule a quick 25-min call to connect and chat through some of your problem space and points of frustration. I might be biased in this way, but I think design can always offer some help or relief, and we’re here for it.
You can also connect with How This Works co on LinkedIn, here on Medium through our publication, at our website, and through the How This Works show, where we’re talking to 100 people about topics they know well — only now it’s more focused on adjacent areas to our present work, service/product design, workshop facilitation, team dynamics/management, and leadership coaching.

Speaking of hi, we promised you a gift. And we’re making good on it.
As many of you who know me (Skipper), you know that music is an important, nay crucial piece of any social occasion, trip to the grocery store, car trip, home life, work life, etc. For Fall 2024, I’ve made a mixtape, titled simply, “hi.” This represents where I am right now, and I hope it brings you the same joy.
Here are some of the songs that I’ve been vibing with lately:
- Erykah Badu — Hi
- Natalie Prass — Short Court Style
- Father John Misty — Mr. Tillman
- Whiskeytown — A Song for You (Gram Parsons cover)
- Mac DeMarco — On the Level
- The Swell Season — Into The Mystic (Van Morrison cover from Once)
- The Ink Spots — Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall (feat. Ella Fitzgerald)
- Gladys Knight & The Pips — I Heard It Through The Grapevine
- St. Paul & The Broken Bones — I’ve Been Loving You (Otis Redding cover)
As well as a number of other tracks. Whether you need something to help focus, relax, or inspire, these songs have been fueling my creativity and work. And I wanted to share them with you.
We’ve included the embedded player from Spotify above with a couple of adjustments based on track availability, you can also grab the original listing from Apple Music. Though an Apple Music subscriber, I prefer the Spotify integration through embed.ly even with three different tracks.
Thank you. Ready, let’s cut this ribbon and let’s go-o-o-o-o.
We appreciate your support.
