U: UNAVOIDABLE ARTQUAKE

PARIS. NEW YORK. LONDON. BERLIN. BEIJING. ART CENTERS SHIFT FROM CITY TO CITY AS ECONMIC POWERS SHIFT. THE FUTURE OFFERS NEW STRUCTURES: MANY NEW ART CENTERS AROUND THE GLOBE.

--

There exists no doubt that the art market is currently shifting to the big four BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), because where money emerges, art follows! The existing ones remain solid, but keep an eye on what’s changing in those fascinating places. The Leroy Brothers focus on China, and you should attack one of the BRICs too. There’s still Russia, India and Brazil available, but be quick, we’re eager to move on!

What about China? Beijing already lost the hype, but that’s good. When walkingthrough the famous 798 District, it’s unlikely to find genuine good affordable work among the mass artifacts produced there. Now, new art districts are popping up in former industrial zones around Beijing. There is where you can discover new potential.

Hong Kong used to be a place only for business and finance. The art scene was artificial and poor. But events move fast in China. Since the launch of ARTHK in 2007, the Hong Kong fair has become a major happening on the international art scene, and because of that, the local art scene has been injected with a boost of energy, resulting in the appearance of a plethora of new art initiatives in the city. Hong Kong is hot at the moment. Will it sustain? Or will another vibrant city take the lead and attract new art initiatives? Shanghai, the financial heart of the country, has experienced an awesome artboom in recent years. The combination of living in the cultural shadow of Beijing and the cities’ competitive character resulted in an incredibly vibrant scene in just a couple of years.

Art scenes are also emerging in lesser known Chinese cities the size of Chicago and Barcelona, including Tianjin, Wuhan, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzen, Chongqing, Jinan, Dalian, Taiyuan, Zhengzhou, Qingdao, Shijiazhuang, Kunming, Lanzhou, Kaosiung, Zibo, Changsha, Nanchang, Ürümuqi,Guiyang, Anshan, Tangshan, Fuzhou, Suzhou, Baotou, Qiqihar, Hefei, Taichung, Nanning, Datong, Yantai, and Xiamen, to name a few. Whew! We decided to stick to Shanghai. Conveniently located between Hong Kong and Beijing, not far from Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul.
