Z: ZAP PAINTINGS

ZAP PROGRAMS, ZAPBOY & GIRLFRIENDS, ZAP ART! IF YOU ARE TIRED WATCHING ONE, GET ANOTHER!

--

“Zap” is a Dutch word used when constantly switching a TV channel to another, in search of a program that pleases.

“I don’t havea romantic attachment to what could have been. If I had kept all thework I had ever bought it would feel like Kane sitting in Xanadusurrounded by his loot. It’s enough to know that I have owned andshown so many masterpieces of modern times.” -Charles Saatchi

Do you swear loyalty to one brand? People brand hop while shopping at the grocery store and name hop when buying art at galleries. Easy access to information and products means more choices and less loyalty to anyone brand or artist. The key to increasing sales to your brand of art is to constantly attract new fans. You may think that loyal collectors are your bread and butter, but don’t be surprised when they switch and you’re no longer their favorite artist.

Counting on your best collectors too much can be a danger to your career. Business can go south and the market knows no mercy. Imagine your best collector is in financial troubleand quits buying superfluous luxury — like your art! Imagine the disastrous consequences. Suddenly, your patron is selling and six of your pieces are on the open market! At auction! Six pieces you need sell for your price to maintain your quote. Hope you and your dealer saved some cash to buy them back.

Let collectors zapartists. You can suggest your peers’ work. Artists don’t do enough favors for each other. There’s no reason not to suggest colleagues for sales. Favors are often returned. Always remind both seller and buyer that you’re the deal between them came to be. Follow up on both sides. Insist on being cc’d on e-mails and are updated on the latest deals. Persistently show your interest in their relation. You don’t want to be left out!
