As equally as important to defend the smart home against physical threats, is to defend it against digital threats as the smart home is completely dependant upon technology. Therefore, the question is ‘Where do we start?’.

In this episode of the publication, based upon my implementation of the smart home, I will share my views on some of the digital threats your smart home is facing and some of the solutions are you can apply to defend yourself against it. Or if not possible, how to limit the scope of the attacker.

Google Assistant is the heart of the constructed smart home. Without this technology, there are no linking elements and no speech recognition. Google Assistant is connected to one or more Google Accounts.

Therefore, it is crucial to protect the used Google Accounts. If you are only using a password for protection, well then you may be in for a surprise. Although Google offers some protection against a brute-force attack, it is not enough. Especially when you are using the same password across multiple accounts.
